The Southern Illinois Miners got off to a strong start on Tuesday night at Bosse Field against the Evansville Otters, scoring a run to take the lead in the first inning, but gave up the early advantage before being held down offensively for the rest of the road series opener in a 4-1 loss.
Joe Duncan led off the game against Otters' starter Randy Wynne with a double, and Kyle Davis followed with an RBI single off the shortstop J.J. Gould's glove to put the Miners ahead 1-0 before a single out was made in the game. An error by Gould gave the Miners a chance with runners at the corners and one out to add on, but Wynne struck out two in a row to keep it a one-run game.
In the bottom of the first, the Otters scored the tying run with two outs on an RBI single by Jeff Gardner against Kurt Heyer to make it 1-1, and in the fourth inning, Evansville grabbed the lead at 2-1 on another two-out RBI hit, this one by Taylor Hillson.
Heyer (7-7) held the Otters down until the sixth inning, when he departed after loading the bases with one out. A Hunter Cullen sacrifice fly made it 3-1, but two subsequent walks by Nick Durazo loaded the bases, then forced in an additional run for a 4-1 score.
Patrick Duester then kept the Otters off the board for the rest of the contest, but Southern Illinois was flummoxed by Wynne (8-8), who struck out 12 batters in eight innings while allowing one run on five hits and no walks. Evansville closer Alex Phillips struck out the side in the ninth as well as the Miners were victims of 15 strikeouts in the game, suffering the defeat to open the road set.
The Miners will look to bounce back and even the series on Wednesday, August 22nd, at 6:35 p.m., sending Geno Encina to the mound against former Miner Spencer Medick, who will pitch for Evansville.
