In 2019, John Lakin returns for his tenth season with the Miners coaching staff, and will work as a special instructor following nine years as an assistant coach/advance scout.
John was born in the Metro East suburb of Granite City, Ill. He played three years at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, and then stayed with the school as the pitching coach for two seasons. In 1982, he joined the Toronto Blue Jays organization where he worked as a scout for two seasons. He has spent much of his professional life in law enforcement and is glad to be working in baseball with such a great organization.
In 2012, he retired from the Madison County Sheriff’s Department after 23 years and served as the chief of police in Glen Carbon, Illinois for three and a half years. In March of 2014, he won the primary election for Madison County Sheriff, and was sworn in to the position in December of that year. He resides with his wife Amy and daughter Abbye in Maryville, Ill.
